This unit is pretty cool when you're into making creative colorful memories on paper for personal use. I won't call it a toy but would view it as a "Personal Home Printer" Digital Printers, Rock On!

$500 sounds nice but what does it cost per page? What is the availability of ink? Consumer ink jet is not a growing market, so I have my doubts. And selling a consumer-oriented $500 printer in this economy is a stretch. The need for speed at the consumer level is, in my opinion, pretty close to non-existent.

You might want to check out http://jimlyonsobservations.blogspot.com.

It's a great blog for following developments in the copier world. Right now he's a CES and blogging from there. It seems that memjet is one of the hits of the show and getting lots of buzz.

It's hard to imagine that it will have a huge impact (except, perhaps, making Silverbrook Research a good deal of money). It providing nice improvements in cost, speed, and quality isn't a fundamental change in the economics of print. Small organizations that currently print on a laser or inkjet may shift to memjet. Small print shops will certainly be taking advantage. But while the overall decline in usage of walk-in print shops may be accelerated slightly by this, it doesn't seem to fundamentally alter the picture. Still, it's a very cool technology and I'm looking forward to seeing production models appear!
